March 2nd and 3rd saw the Saint Athanasius Branch of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada (St. A’s U.C.B.C.) run a successful 2nd Annual Angels Table-Top Hockey Tournament. St. A’s U.C.B.C. and IBEW Local 2067 member Bro. Mark Woitas was a key organizer, and Local 2067 was one of 14 sponsors of the event.
Despite numerous events going on in Regina (including the Tim Hortons Brier), the tournament had 16 participants who battled it out to get a chance to sip from the Angels’ Cup. The contenders and approximately 40 onlookers were treated to a double-elimination bracket with plenty of action (including 30 games, 10 of which decided in sudden-death overtime), refreshments, a lunch buffet and door prize give aways.
The St. A’s U.C.B.C. raises money for donations, and volunteers for such causes as: Childrens’ Hospital, Boy Scouts, Marion Centre, Salvation Army, along with projects within the Saint Athanasius Parish. IBEW Local 2067 donated the championship trophy, medals for the top three finishers, as well as some door prizes. “This tournament has raised almost $1000 in its two years in existence. Funds raised and donated within our communities by U.C.B.C. and many other organizations make possible many things that would not happen otherwise.” Bro. Mark Woitas offered. IBEW believes in community as well and is proud to be a continued sponsor for this event.
The 2018 Champion was Emery Wolfe, second place went to Bro. Woitas, while Basil Kuzyk took home the bronze. Keep your eyes peeled for the announcement of next years tournament date. St. A’s U.C.B.C. would like to thank all of the sponsors, including Great Canadian Brewhouse and IBEW Local 2067.
“Let’s be good neighbours. We need to help each other when we can to make our lives better.” – Bro. Mark Woitas
