The March 22nd weekend saw the success of the 3rd Annual Angel’s Table-top Hockey Tournament. The tournament, organized by the St. Athanasius branch of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada (St. A’s UCBC), was a huge success, due in no small part to the dedication of UCBC (and IBEW Local 2067) member Bro. Mark Woitas. The event is one of many fundraising opportunities undertaken by Bro Woitas and the UCBC group. A tournament summary penned by Bro. Woitas follows below. IBEW Local 2067 wants to thank Bro. Woitas, the St. A’s UCBC and Bro. Woitas’ wife Karen (the event chef) for their unwavering commitment to the event this year, and years previous, which Local 2067 has had the honor of being major sponsor.
Angels Table-Top Hockey Tournament Report
The third edition of the Angels Table-Top Hockey Tournament was held March 22 and 23, 2019 at St. Athanasius parish hall. Friday night was a pre-season night with socializing and time to practice for the tournament or play cribbage with friends and family. There was a cash bar and free popcorn.
Saturday morning began with registration at 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. The draw was then set up and the games began at 10:30 a.m. There was a cash bar as well as free coffee and popcorn served throughout the day. At noon all interested were able to enjoy a buffet style meal of sausage, perogies, cabbage rolls, mushroom sauce, butter and onions, pickles and salad for a cost of $10.00 per person. Pickled eggs were available at the bar for $1.00 each.
There were 24 registered players, both male and female, ranging in age from 14 years to into their 70’s. Registration fee was $20.00/player.
The tournament was a double elimination style (everyone was guaranteed 2 games). Regular games were 5-minute straight time. If tied after this there was a 5-minute sudden death period. If still tied the winner was decided by both players cutting a deck of cards with the person cutting the highest number winning. There were several games that went into overtime with a couple even having to be decided by cutting the cards. The play-off games were two 5-minute straight time periods with the players switching sides after the first period. If tied after the 2 periods 5-minute sudden death periods would be played until a winner was declared (players would change sides after each period). 53 games were played. 7 went into sudden death play while 3 were decided by cutting the cards. In all 125 goals were scored and there was 34 shutouts. All play-off games were decided in regular play. No penalties were handed out and the only injuries were broken egos.
There were 25 door prizes. 24 were randomly drawn throughout the day. All the names were then put back into the drum for the grand prize draw (40-inch smart tv). Door prize donors were Choice Electric, Sherwood Co-op, Ukrainian Co-op, Troy and Diedre Romanow, Auto · Electric, Ernie Paluck, Harry Moleschi, I.B.E.W. (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) 2067, Rochdale Dental, International Association of Electrical Inspectors and St. Athanasius Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada. We are very thankful to all these people for their generous donations.
The I.B.E.W. has been a large part of this tournament, past and present. As well as donating the beautiful first place trophy and medals for the top three players, they also donated the prize money ($150.00 for first place, $75.00 for second place and $25.00 for third place). As well they sponsored a table for the tournament. Other tables were sponsored by Posh Patio Deck covers and enclosures, Pits Hockey Club and Ukrainian Co-op.
The first-place winner was Zach Walter, the second-place winner was Clay Reddick and the third-place winner was Karl Woitas.
There was much feedback from everyone attending, players and fans, on how exciting it was and how much fun everyone had. Many made new friends and got to visit with old friends and spend time relaxing with family.
Thank you to all who participated in any way to make this possible and we hope to see you next year.
